What is the difference between rattan, wicker and straw in cat furniture?

Rattan is a vine-based material — the whole cane is used for structural frames, while the split cane is woven into surfaces. Wicker refers to the weaving technique rather than a specific material — rattan, willow or synthetic fibers can all be wicker-woven. Straw and cattail are grass-based plant fibers woven into flat or bowl-shaped surfaces. All three are breathable, natural and non-toxic.

Is hand-woven cat furniture safe if cats chew on it?

Natural rattan, straw and cattail are non-toxic. Light chewing and scratching on woven surfaces is normal. Replace any piece where the weave is being actively pulled apart rather than just lightly worn — loose strands from any woven material should be trimmed promptly rather than left accessible for ingestion.
