How to Wash a Felt Cat Cave (Without Shrinking It)

Care Guide · Cat Caves

Merino wool felt cat cave in natural color

Your cat has finally adopted the felt cave. It is also, after a few months, covered in fur and smelling a little too lived-in. Toss it in the washing machine and you may get it back the size of a teacup. Here is how to clean it the right way.

Short answer: to wash a felt cat cave, hand wash it in cold water with a wool-safe detergent, press the water out without wringing, reshape it while damp around a towel, and air dry it flat, away from direct heat. No washing machine, no tumble dryer, no hot water. Between washes, a lint roller and fresh air do most of the work.

Why Felt Cat Caves Shrink in the Wash

Felt is wool fibers locked together by heat, moisture and friction. That is exactly how it is made, and exactly what a washing machine does all over again. Hot water opens the tiny scales on each wool fiber, the drum's tumbling pushes them together, and the fibers lock tighter. The result: a cave that is smaller, stiffer and misshapen, and it cannot be undone.

Cold water and gentle handling avoid all three triggers. The good news is that wool is naturally resistant to dirt and odors, so a felt cat cave needs a full wash far less often than a fabric cat bed. Most of the time, regular light care is enough.

Weekly Care: Keep It Clean Between Washes

  • ✓Remove fur. A lint roller or a damp rubber glove lifts hair from felt in seconds. Run your hand in one direction inside the cave.
  • ✓Vacuum gently. Use the upholstery brush on low suction for dust and litter grains.
  • ✓Air it out. An hour by an open window or outside in the shade refreshes wool remarkably well.
  • ✓Spot clean right away. Dab small marks with a cloth dipped in cold water and a drop of wool detergent. Dab, never rub.

Do that, and a full wash becomes an occasional job, every few months or after an accident. When it is time, follow these steps.

How to Wash a Felt Cat Cave, Step by Step

1. Remove loose fur and debris

Lint-roll and vacuum the cave inside and out first. Hair and litter turn into a sticky mess once wet.

2. Fill a basin with cold water

Use a bathtub or a large sink with cold or barely lukewarm water, under about 86°F / 30°C. Add a small amount of wool-safe, unscented detergent. Skip fabric softener and bleach.

3. Soak, then press gently

Submerge the cave and let it soak for 10–15 minutes. Then press it softly with flat hands to move water through the felt. No scrubbing, twisting or rubbing: that friction is what shrinks wool.

4. Rinse in clean cold water

Drain, refill with clean cold water at the same temperature, and press again until no suds remain. Cats have sensitive noses, so leftover detergent scent can put them off their favorite spot.

5. Remove water without wringing

Press the cave against the side of the basin, then roll it in a large dry towel and press down on the roll. Repeat with a second towel if needed.

6. Reshape while damp

Stuff the cave with a rolled towel or a small cushion to restore its dome, and smooth the entrance into a round shape with your hands. Felt sets in the shape it dries in.

7. Air dry flat, away from heat

Dry it on a rack or a towel in a ventilated room, out of direct sun and away from radiators. Allow 24–48 hours. Make sure it is completely dry inside before your cat moves back in.

MeowShelf Tip: Wash the cave in the morning and leave a favorite blanket in its place. Once it is dry, put that blanket back inside for a day: it brings back the familiar scent your cat looks for.

Each of our caves follows the same principle, with a few small differences in material.

Merino Cocoon

Merino Cocoon wool felt cat cave

The Merino Cocoon is made of 100% merino wool felt, which naturally resists odors and regulates temperature. That is why it needs washing rarely. When it does, follow the steps above exactly, and reshape it carefully around a rolled towel: its dome is what makes cats feel safe inside.

Pebble

The Pebble is the easiest to keep clean: it unzips flat, so you can vacuum or lint-roll the inside in a minute. Its high-density felt is designed to resist pilling and scratching. For a deep clean, hand wash it cold and air dry it open.

Chunky Knit Cocoon

The Chunky Knit Cocoon is knitted rather than felted, so it is less prone to shrinking but more prone to stretching. Never hang it to dry: lay it flat and reshape it so the knit keeps its form.

Even with the right routine, a few common mistakes undo all the care.

Mistakes to Avoid

  1. The washing machine, even on a wool cycle. The drum's movement is enough to felt the wool further.
  2. Hot water or sudden temperature changes between washing and rinsing.
  3. Wringing or twisting to remove water.
  4. The tumble dryer, a radiator or a hair dryer to speed up drying.
  5. Strong scents: fabric softener, essential oils or scented sprays. They can irritate cats and make them avoid the cave.

Avoid those, and a good wool cave lasts for years. Here are the questions we get most often.

FAQ: Cleaning a Felt Cat Cave

Can I put a felt cat cave in the washing machine?

No. Even a gentle wool cycle combines water and movement, which is exactly what makes felt shrink and stiffen. Hand washing in cold water takes about 20 minutes and keeps the cave in its original shape and size.

How often should I wash a wool cat cave?

Every few months is usually enough, or right away after an accident. Wool resists dirt and odors naturally. Weekly lint-rolling, light vacuuming and airing keep it fresh in between.

How do I get rid of smells in a felt cat cave?

Start with fresh air: a few hours in a ventilated spot out of direct sun. For stronger odors, sprinkle a little baking soda inside, leave it overnight, then vacuum it out thoroughly. If the smell remains, hand wash the cave in cold water.

My felt cave shrank. Can I fix it?

Only partly. Soak it in cold water with a little hair conditioner for 30 minutes, then gently stretch it back over a rounded object such as a bowl wrapped in a towel, and let it dry in that shape. Severe felting cannot be fully reversed.

How long does a felt cat cave take to dry?

Usually 24–48 hours, depending on thickness and room humidity. Turn it occasionally and make sure the inside is completely dry before your cat uses it again.
